Okay, that was probably really cryptic. That was supposed to be a reply =
off list to an email Martin sent off list. Time to get some coffee =
<sigh> Sorry.
=20
On the other hand, I do have a response for Moon and that is... It's =
coming to me on Friday. I talked with a chum of mine who is the owner =
of the copy and is also doing his dissertation on round gobies (actually =
the systematics of neogobius). From what I understand, the point of the =
article was that _most_ exotics have little or no effect on overall =
systems. They have to compete like everyone else, deal with predation, =
etc. Which I can agree with. =20
=20
However, I guess they used San Francisco Bay as an example? My initial =
thought was "Yeah that's nice... That's pretty darn wide open, with =
species used to dealing with invasions, compared to an area of high =
endemism such as, oh, the Cumberland River."
=20
I'd also like to see how they treat invasive exotics (species that seem =
to have no control and affect multiple trophic levels within an =
ecosystem) with my own eyes before I make any kind of judgement. For =
example, corbicula or tubenose gobies seem to fill empty niches, and =
just become part of the ecosystem package. However, something like =
rusty crayfish or the buckthorns... Completely re-engineer the systems =
they invade.

Has anyone seen the may issue of Discover Magazine where they say that =
introduced exotics isn't such a bad thing?
