Re: NANFA-L-- (Re-focus) Releasing native fish back to the wild

I have read with some interest the posts on fish release. Personally,
I support the don't ever release or return a fish to native waters
once taken home unless working with a research or government agency.

A couple or thoughts:

I have virtually never seen any signs or posts at any of the big (or
small) pet retailers (like PetSmart or PetCo) about this topic. Maybe
someone with connections or as a NANFA initiative, we could get these
retailers to post a brief info sign about the dangers of pet release.
This might: 1. reach a huge number of people 2. help (maybe) prevent
some of these release disasters 3. if they would allow the NANFA logo
and a byline this could be great advertising for the organization

Unfortunately I deal with disease everyday. One of the things we have
to manage is uncertainty. That is why we have Universal Precautions
(we assume EVERYONE you touch has HIV, Hep C, etc.). We're not
perfect at it, but I think the same principles should apply to the
release/transfer of captive animals (just don't do it if at all
possible).

Thanks.

Tim
