I have never had trouble with darters showing aggression toward each other in any of my tanks. Last spring when breeding Tuscaloosa daters I had 13 in a 15 gallon they spawned for months. That was the most I have ever had in a breeding tank but usually I will have 5 or 6. I have a 60-gallon native community tank and two 30 gallon tanks for wintering. The rest of my tanks are 15, 10 and 5 gallons. I have kept 3 or 4 adult darters in 5-gallon tanks when using the 10 and 15-gallon tanks for growing fry. If you do regular water changes 10 daters and a dozen minnows in a 40-gallon would be fine.
