Mine were pretty small. Probably less than 4-5 inches. Maybe I didn't give them enough time to adjust to pellets. Or maybe it's a regional thing--some populations might be less fussy than others. I had a little luck getting them to take a strip of flounder occasionally, but not much else other than live and moving fish. Elmer Guerri once told me he trained them to take a piece of turkey luncheon meat. Elmer would wrap a pellet a slice of meat and get the crappie to take them that way.

And I know that in the Big Bass Pro Shop tank outside Baltimore, that the crappie eat a prepared gel food.

Anyway, Jeff, I'd be interested in hearing of whether you succeed in getting them to eat something other than minnows or not. They're one of my all time favorite fish to keep in an aquarium, and I'd keep them now if I had the space. When they get bigger, the males will likely get nasty as they go into spawning mode. (One of mine bullied his tankmates.)

What size were your crappie? Could it be older ones are more set in their
ways?

These are 4-5 inches, so they must be pretty young.
