Believe it or not... With a dipnet downstream of the target, turning each rock over one-in-a time, seems to be the best solo method. Microsampling, so to speak.
The other method is to get someone who's willing to REALLY dig into the substrates (not this bump n run kick seining stuff people do) and get them up out of the habitat. There's a large population on the Blanchard River up here (exceptionally sized specimens as well. Cavender couldn't believe the vouchers coming back :) and if we just dilly dally, we might find one or so. But if we REALLY work the substrates, we find a heck of a lot more.
