Excuse me. I meant to say, "give the feeders a high quality pellet before feeding..."

When I kept piscivorous fish, I'd just give them one or two feeders per fish per day. If you dump a lot of feeders in, they get greedy, and then the waste they produce overwhelms the bio filter and they get sick. It might be a good idea to set up a ten gallon or so tank for the feeders. An added benefit is that you can give the feeders a high quality just before feeding them to the crappies. In theory, the crappies will benefit from the nutrient content of the food that the feeders have just eaten. FYI, also, I soak pellets before feeding, so that they don't expand in the fishes stomach and kill it. I Don't know if dry pellets in the feeder fish's stomach would cause problems for the predator, but, I've never wanted to chance it.

LOL. Well I have ate a few Crappie in my day.
I added 15 (+/-) feeder goldfish in the tank. There was an instant
difference in the behavior! They came out of the plants and a couple
actually got aggressive toward the feeders. The smallest one, and it was the
thinnest one of them was very active. He was not a good hunter but he sure
tried! :-)
I went to bed and the lights went out with 7 feeders left in the tank. Woke
up with none left.

With those beautiful, graceful crappies, I don't think you'll need to add
any other fish. It's nice to see someone appreciate them outside of a
frying pan.
