The contamination killed only fish, sparing freshwater mussels, crawfish and
tiny organisms that fish feed on. That increased the odds of survival for the
1 million fish, from about 50 species, released back into the river starting
in 2000.
Among the game fish species released were largemouth and smallmouth bass,
channel catfish, crappie and bluegill.
The DNR also chose to reintroduce sauger -- a native fish related to walleye
that had been absent from the river for many decades. The fish plays a role in
the life cycle of mussels, which, after hatching, catch a ride on fish by
clinging to gills and fins.
