That is my experience too, after 60 years. However, I have seen novices have
this problem. I think the key is to start with some established aquarium
materials -- water, plants, gravel, filter pads, whatever. I always, or almost
always, add a handful of Java Moss to a new tank along with some water from
another tank. Plus the fish come with some water from an established tank (unless
the fish came from a pet store).
