The other thing one needs to keep in mind when breeding sailfins is th=
at males become sexually mature-in-a variety of sizes, from tiny quarter in=
ch "sneakers", to 4 or 5 inch males with big sails. Although the stor=
ebought sailfins I keep do grow a little after developing a gonopodium, the=
y don't grow very much. If you're interested in big sailfins, you nee=
d to rigorously cull out the smaller males and only expose the females to t=
he larger males.

-----Original Message-----
From: Bob Bock <=

Moon, your not the first person to tell me that sailfins have been get=
ting smaller. At our local plant club meeting, I met a guy who looked=
to be in his mid to late 70s, and he told me that when he was a kid, molli=
es used to be a big fish. Similarly, as a kid in the early 60s, a rem=
ember a pair of albino sailfins in the fish section of the local Two Guys t=
hat dwarfed the little black mollies in the other tank. It's hard to =
remember back almost 40 years ago, but I'd have to guess that those fish we=
re anywhere from 5 to 6 inches long!

-----Original Message-=

he parentage of all the aquarium mollies, especially blacks. Black mo=
rphs of several molly species occur in the wild, but the most common are fr=
om Poecilia sphenops. Some are also from P. latipinna. The sail=
fin on the fish you bought suggests latipinna, velifera (or other tropical=
) heritage, but the red margin on the fin suggests some other parentage als=
o, even including sphenops. The short of it is, mollies in the aquari=
um trade are derived from lineages long ago established from a variety of p=
arents. Unless you bought fish from a breeder who could document his =
fish, I would just call them "black mollies." That is sort of like sa=
ying that your pet dog is a dog.

Dave

Th=

anymore much less the huge black ones. I remember I paid $1.50 for it 42 ye=
