Actually, it's not. I guess for the purposes of what Todd is using it for
it is fine to over dose since he will be rinsing it thoroughly. But adding
too much sodium thiosulfate can start a chain reaction called "white tank
syndrome". It is usually initiated by a low pH, or a pocket of low pH, in
which the sulfur precipitates out and while it does, takes all the O2 out of
the water with it. So, I should clarify that when you have fish in the
tank, a 'little more won't hurt' attitude is a very dangerous thing. There
have been several documented cases of large tank wipeouts due to this. When
bleaching aquascaping items, I usually rinse very well, then add thiosulfate
to a bucket of water and dip the items in it, taking caution on very pourous
items, of course. Another quick rinse and it is usually good. For me, it
is hard to rinse until I don't smell bleach anymore because it smell is
usually too pervasive in my nose;)
