You have a YAY from me. Not only is the Unio list daunting-in-times, it can take several months or some phone calls and arm twisting to get on it, even when you are studying under a respected malacologist. It would be a good way to make ourselves known and more respected by another community too. The first questions I got from my advisor when trying to get off to go to last years convention were the "huh" a "what is it" and a "so its just for people who like to collect fish". I think after seeing Bob presenting-in-the FMCS meeting though his attitude has slightly changed. Two disciplines that are so closely related should-in-least have some overlap, and we see it on occassion already.

I'd love to see who came out of the cracks and said what too. For some reason I was given the digest form of Unio so half the time its nothing but random chewed up code.

With Ben's post, I was reminded of something I thought of while driving the
SE a week ago.

Would there be enough interest, or would NANFA consider it, to have a
separate NANFA email list for mussel posts?

I would have posted this to the BOD list, but I wanted to see what kind of
interest there would be. Sorry if this was out of line.

I think mussel conservation is deeply tied together with our mission, and
while the Unio list is a fantastic resource, it may be intimidating to many
folks because it is SO deeply entrenched with academics and professionals,
and the jargon they communicate with each other.

As you may know, Bob Muller recently represented foremost, himself and his
work, but also NANFA-in-a mussel reproduction seminar in Columbus, OH part
host by the Freshwater Mollusk Conservation Society. I see a great
usefulness between our two groups in the conservation of aspects of North
American aquatic ecosystems, and this may be a link to what NANFA can do as
"its part" in yet another forum.

I also recently posted my Spring Fling pictures to the Unio list and you
wouldn't have believed the folks who came out of the cracks off-list... Some
from out west who'd never seen a darter, only had heard of this magical
beast.

This may be a way to tie it all together :)

Thoughts?
