This is definately another way to address it. However, personally, I =
don't like the inherit reduction in the efficiency of the powerhead. =
With a strainer, you just pull off loose bits of plants and whatnot when =
you see them, no big whoop. In the case of foam, you have an immediate =
reduction by the drag created by the matrix of the foam, and to worsen =
that, you're capturing rough and even fine particulate matter. =20
=20
If my goal were to create current, I'd want to have that device as =
unimpeded as possible.... You're going to generate additional heat you =
probably don't want by having this inefficiency. =20
=20
I would then use a more efficient device (such as an air driven sponge =
or an _external_ canister designed to have that drag as part of its =
caluculated GPH) to capture the particulate matter, if your goal is to =
also break up some of the detritus and return it's nutritional value to =
the plants. =20
=20

Some also have the nice option of fitting a sold seperately foam =
prefilter. I used a similar PVS uptake tube as well before. That way I =
could have the current being generated near the top but the water being =
taken up far lower for an intent to keep the fish away because I did =
have some problems of redside dace getting sucked against the strainer. =
They seemed to like being right up against the current coming out and =
sometimes would get a liiiiittle too close.
