Longear is a highly variable species, especially in coloration.
Therefore, many subspecies have been described. Both red and gold
belly occur. Here in Oklahoma I've seen many of each, and mixed.
Someone commented on the red spots on the body, too, as being
unusual. No, many populations include individuals with such spots,
including the specimen pictured in Boschung and Mayden's Alabama fish
book.
