On the lighter side (if there is a lighter side to pain), Archie Carr
of turtle fame published (in _Dopeia_, formerly put out by ASIH) a
dichotomous key to the vertebrates of Florida which included as
couplets jabs to the thumb with catfish spines to determine pain
intensity, whereby one was supposed to then determine which catfish hit
him or her!
