Peter, Joel -- old clogged-up pleated canister filter cartridges - the cylindrical type -work great for spawning many Cyprinellas, and you can proabably get used ones free from friends or shops that use them. And they're obviously easier to move to a separate tank for hatching than a pile of slate.
C. lutrensis has been banned from sale in some states, including NC, due to its extreme invasiveness & propensity for hybridizing with other Cyprinellas, including protected ones. wholesalers might quit carrying a fish after enough major markets have made it illegal. see this link from the USGS Nuisance Aquatic Species section: http://cars.er.usgs.gov/Southeastern_Aquatic_Fauna/Freshwater_Fishes/Shiner_Research/shiner_research.html
