Hi,
I've had a small group of E olmstedi from the canal at the top of my
street for a year and a week now. Last year they spawned inconclusively
in early May, a month after I caught them.
My fishroom runs at 65 to 70 in the winter, and since their tank (30
gallon, power filter, pea gravel - 5 darters on their own) has been
directly on the cement floor since November, it was probably closer to a
balmy 62 (for a Canadian fish overwintering...).
Now, in the past week, I have been watching the 3 females expand. Poor
overwintering conditions aside, i think these fish are contemplating a
spawning. However, the males have no colours. They have occasionally
gone into a lovely spawning coloration over the past year, but not now.
I may move them to a 20 gallon where i can see them better. Any advice
on triggers/conditions for successfully breeding them would be
appreciated.
