Well, one comment would be the source of this, the National Center for
Policy Analysis. This is a think tank dedicated to destroying the Endangered
Species Act and to the denial of pollution as a threat to people and the
environment. NCPA is the college-educated wing of the "Wise Use" movement
and other such thugs.

The blurb on Indians does have one cold truth to it, though; different human
groups have been amazingly destructive of the various floras and faunas
around the world. We in the U.S. have already cashed in the original forests
of this continent, along with the passenger pigeons, buffalo and whales. The
same process is happening in Amazonia and Indonesia today. Will "market
value" save the tigers of Sumatra? (If you say yes, I still have that bridge
available in Brooklyn. Similar arguments failed to dissuade Teddy Roosevelt
from expanding the National Park system 95 years ago.)

Happy Earth Day, and we should all be grateful & relieved for those darters
and shiners still around!
