Give the man a prize! John Smith did indeed report seeing (and nearly
falling in love with) a beautiful mermaid. I do not know about Ponce de
Leon, but there is another well-known navigator who reported that two named
members of his crew saw a mermaid in North American waters.

Did John Smith have mermaid sightings around the Virginia colony around
1610? And I think I remember hearing of Ponce de Leon's mermaid sightings in

Florida waters on his way to looking for the Fountain of Youth.
