Jim-
Wow! A 300 gallon is spoiling little fish like fatheads. I have tried
making a "poor-mans chiller" using a coffee can in a cooler with tubing
running from a cannister filter and to the tank, but failed miserably hehe.
The water pressure got all "out-of-wack", to be technical ;) I tried it again
but still no success. I think that idea might work, since the water in the
coffee can could cool down better, since it stays in the cooler longer, and
the metal staying cold. I would not recomend trying it, it seems to be more
trouble that its worth, but I'm sure it would work if done correctly.
Persistence and patience is something I don't always have when working with
mechanical projects such as this. Good luck if you decide to follow through!
