I use a 1" mixture of mushroom compost and clay under about 3" of play sand
in my plant tank. I use no filter except small freshwater clams and a couple
of freshwater mussels. Muddy water can be a problem if you keep fish big
enough to keep the mud stirred up but it usually settles quickly (a couple of
hours). My plants, both submerged and emergent do quite well but I use a
metal halide light. Mostly because of the needs of the emergent plants. I
have a cypress tree, dwarf umbrella palms, and some dwarf cattails growing in
the tank with spadderdocks from lake waccamaw, banana plants and pepilis
diandria.
