See- that's the problem w/ local common names. A web search shows these to
be "Eastern tent caterpillers" (Malacosoma americanum). They make for great
action in the sunfish tank though. They're so furry that they 're held on
the surface by surface tension and they wriggle until something notices them
and then WHAM! (evil laugh).
