Hi all--

Wanted to let you know the results of a mini-collecting trip I
participated in on 8/19/00. The location was the Blue River in Indiana,
south of Knightstown, approximately 1 mile west of SR 140 on Carthage
Pike, in the section of the river located behind my mother-in-law's
house.

Since I was collecting with my daughter (age 4) and my husband (not into
fish), this was a short trip, and I only had two small dipnets with me.
Water was between 1.5 and 3' deep in this section of the river, with
conditions ranging from gravel riffles to still sandy bottoms. Water
temperature was in the low to mid 70's.

We found:
one mottled sculpin, approx 4" TL
6 rainbow (I think) darters, approx 1.5" TL, possibly 2 males and 4
females
one darter, species unkown, approx 2" TL
2 crayfish

We also saw, but did not catch, additional darters, schooling fish
ranging from tiny to 6", and more crayfish. We also found assorted
mussel shells similar to what were found along the Kokosing River.

I would like to try to sample this river again (the next time I visit my
in-laws) with someone that knows native fish and with more equipment (ie
a seine) and see what lurks under the downed trees and along the banks.
Anyone interested?

Catherine
