I have the same black water problems here in NC. I hate to dive in black
water! I've done it to recover things people dropped out of their boats but
it wasn't very much fun! I used to snorkel in a local lake that was crystal
clear. In fact it is named Crystal Lake but of course housing developments
over run it beautiful shoreline and now due to septic tanks it is dark and
forbidding. The lake is several acres and has no inlet or outlet but is
filled by underground (underwater?) springs bubbling up. I have seen them in
the deepest portion of the lake. The lake was at least 30' deep but now it
may be less due to sedimentation.
