Elassoma, pygmy sunfish, eat freshly hatched snails. Once they get much
bigger than that they are too big to fit in their mouths, and I assume the
shells would be pretty hard for them to crush up. Mudminnows and many
killifish love snails too, and some of the larger killies, sunfish and
mudminnows will suck adult snails out of their shells. Some species of
sunfish eat shell and all. It is possible that the elassoma will take the
snail out of the shell as well . I have seen all this happen first hand,
other than the elassoma.
