[marine micro algae doesn't seem to interesting to me. It's green, and
grows on the side of the glass. Some other species are also red. Macro
algae, however is a more organized organism, and does assume some
interesting shapes vaguely reminiscent of vascular plants.]
I don't have any
> experience with salt,
[You can make artificial seawater by adding a salt mix, which you can find
at your lfs. Basically, it's a half cup of salt per gallon of water.]

so there is probably a million things wrong with
> everything I just said. lol. But, anyways, what kind of sediment could I
use?

[I just use black aquarium gravel. For halimeda, you might want to
consider crushed coral. But if you ever want to put fish in, you're
probably better off with a dark gravel. Fish's colors fade over light
gravel.]
> what salinity? I suppose I'd have to get a specific gravity meter as well.
[I don't know. I just keep it in the green band on the floating
thermometer-hygrometer I bought. An essential piece of equipment, which
you can get for a couple dollars at your lfs.]
> Could I just use natural sunlight?
[Depends on what kind of dissolved nutrients are in your tap water.
Natural sunlight might over stimulate the microalgaes, which might cover up
and smothercate your macroalgaes. If you used distilled or reverse osmosis
water, before making your marine mix, this would be less of a problem.]
