I have used the 3M / Scotch green scrubby pads. They have not etched glass
that I can see. You may be pick up particulates from your gravel when you
get down, and then these become imbedded in the pad to scratch up the glass
next scrubbing. I have found that yarn mops for spawning killifish work
great at scrubbing the glass, very gentle, even on plexi tanks.
