If it was marine I'd suggest a strong antibiotic as a quick fix. Ultimately
what you have is a nutrient imbalance. I would predict phosphates but it
could be deferent in freshwater. partial water changes will help if the new
water isn't already high in nutrients. That is sometimes the case with tap
water. I use mostly collected rain water around here it's the only way.
