Here are two things I heard about,
One was a bowfin that was forgotten in a tank for a year and was still
alive. I find this hard to believe, but did read about it. I also heard
of someone leaving pachypanchax playfairi ( a madagascar killifish) in a
tank for 9 months ( while cleaning there fish room, stuff was set in front
of a tank on the floor that contained these fish) and they survived.
These are not tiny fish either, they reach 3 inches. the killis probably
had some infusoria to live off of and also being in a messy fish room I am
sure grease moths laid there eggs in the aqurium and may have kept them
fed.
these two for instances do not diminish the amazing feat of the silver
eel however.
