Pygmies should do quite well in a filterless aquarium...probably better than
most, based on habitat preferences in the wild.

I have kept both marine and freshwater tanks for years with no filtration,
other than empty hang-on filters to supply current. They've generally done
much better than many other tanks I've kept. I like a deep (6-8"), fine
substrate in both. But, the key is not to rush them! These are slowly
developing systems and without added biological or chemical filtration, can
be overwhelmed when stocked too fast.
