I got mine on ebay for $5,000, then I found I could have checked it out of
the library for free. I'm such an idiot...

The book is a great journal of adventure, discovery, humor, philosophizing
(and collecting!).
In case you're unfamiliar with it, the entire book written by Steinbeck and
Ed Ricketts is "Sea of Cortez", and includes a lot more collecting
information, taxonomy, photos, etc. "Log from the Sea of Cortez" is
Steinbeck's text from the book (and MUCH smaller). There's a review at
http://www.ecotopia.org/about/cortez.html but I imagine you could find tons
of stuff about it with little trouble.

Does anyone else recommend any books on natural history and aquatic
adventures in North American waters?
