NANFA-- snail suicide?

I have noticed for a couple of years that snails in my 60 gallon aquarium
crawl up into corners above the water line, dry out and die. Same thing
happens ocassionally in some of my other aquariums, but not as consistently
as with the 60. I have red shiners, SRBD & golden topminnows in this
aquarium along with a couple of stinkpot turtles and a few devil crayfish.
The 60 has some water hyacinth, some anacharis and some moss and I seldom
clean the back glass, so there's algae on the glass. I also have a very
small, hard shelled snail that looks similar to the ordinary pond snails only
miniature that seems to survive if not thrive. Anyone got any idea as to why
the pond snails are committing suicide?
