Sort of like "America" and not "Mininisota".

Russia is a big country. The largest actually. With
the expected multible biomes and land froms.

A quick glace at a world map shows that the southern
most portion of Russia has roughly the same latitude
as Virgina. (the black sea region, I think it is
classified as a "cool mediterianian" climate)

Then you have to take into account air currents, ocean
currents, and relative altitude of each region...

Your teacher was probally from the region West of the
Urals (where most of the population is) in the
relativly mild weathered agricultural region south
east of Poland. The weather there (estimating wildly)
is somewhere between Iowa and New York.
