Yes, the subscription rates for many journals is outrageously expensive. I'm surprised that even university libraries can afford them.

I'm sure this idea isn't original, but it does allow me to score free copies of the papers I want....

Go to a journal's website and scan the table of contents. Usually there are abstracts and the corresponding author's email address. I blip the author an email requesting a PDF of the paper (or a hard copy if a PDF isn't available). Nine times out of 10 I get the PDF, often within 24 hours.
