Yes, that is the current state of affairs wrt publications.

Some enterprising publishers are trying to create a new
model - the authors pay for publication, but, the journal
is then free to the public. An standard 8-page article
may cost $1000-$2000 to get published including peer-review.

Journals don't pay you anything for an article; if anything
you pay them so-called page fees. Not in Science or Nature, but
if you publish in those journals your career and professional
standing are hugrly enhanced. And you can impress your mom, too.
