As Ray pointed out that's the "Northern longear" subspecies or as I agree
more appropriately, the Great Lakes longear as he describes. This
particular specimen came from the Grand River in NE Ohio where any
connection to the Ohio River system has _long_ past.

What's really interesting is the longear from the Maumee watershed (which
has connections to the Ohio River system) are more of an intergrade between.
I don't know if that's because some genetics have made their way through the
old canal system, or if fish in the watershed just maintained more of the
"southern" characteristics. That was why we were going to put these pics
up... Just didn't finish the whole thought yet :)

In any case, I need to get a new pic of the one male from the Maumee
watershed in near full glory now. He's freakin' orange, red and blue for a
4" fish :)
