Douglas (Freshwater Fishes of Louisiana) cites two populations of freshwater
pipefish in two oxbow lakes of the Mississippi.These lakes are landlocked,
and 300 miles from the coast, so it's impossible that they move to
freshwater to spawn. His info comes from a 1962 article in "Copeia".
However, subsequent attempts to collect pipefish later were unsuccessful
(personal communication). I plan on trying myself this summer.

My cousin, a fisheries biologist, also quoted a recent paper in which
Syngnathus scovelli have been found in the stomach contents of largemouth
bass in the Atchafalaya basin. quoted below;

I found some more info about
Syngnathus scovelli. It was found in the stomachs of largemouth and spotted
bass taken from the Atchafalaya basin. This info is from a paper by David L.
Schultz, department of biological sciences, Nicholls State Uinversity. The
title is The Diet of Largemouth Bass and Spotted Bass in the Atchafalaya
Basin.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
I have developed a bit of an obsession with finding this fish.
