Steffen,
You bring up the economy, that what my response to her was about. Someone brought up the Humpback. Now look at the industry that has grown up around the tourist wanting to go whale watching! Environmentalism pays! Below is my message to Joyce.

Joyce,

I disagreed with your entire premise (and several of your "facts") on the article "MORRISON: We saved "a fish". But that is not what I am writing about. I just wanted to add a quick little historical note in regards to the sturgeon and paddle fish (also endangered). Prior to the engineering of the Mississippi, the addition of locks and dams, the sturgeon and paddle fish represented significant income sources for some up and down the river. These fish were collected for their roe or eggs to make caviar. With Beluga sturgeon in Russia now rare and endangered people are again looking to the American sturgeon and Paddle fish as a potential source of roe and income. But the watershed must be maintained for this to happen.

Granted, the ESA seems at times to not make sense, but the conservation of our environment is for the long term. If we were to study the issue in much more detail we would see that other economic benefits would be attained/maintained by the preservation of our streams.
