This is probably not what it is, but I have seen bullheads with forked
barbels. I am not sure what causes this, but maybe damaged barbels regrow,
but the original end was still intact. I had a bowfin with a double nostril
barbel. That one was from damage.

I would go with pulling it off with your fingers or a tweezer. It would be
much less stressful than a salt bath. Wearing a cotton glove soaked in cool
water will help you grip the bullhead, and avoid the spines a bit more - of
you are worried about that. A bare , throughly wet hand, would be the best
way to grab it.
