We also call 'em water spiders here, but water strider is a more common (and more descriptive) name. They are predators capable of eating anthing small that they can sink their proboscis into (including small fry). Check out

Subject: NANFA-- pond "spiders"

Again this year I have water "spiders" that appeared on my ornamental ponds
and in my daphnia buckets. I am curious to learn more about them including
their life cycles.

Do fish sometimes eat them? A friend claims he watched his Koi come up and
eat all of his but I find that hard to believe.
