Sherman got worse press than he really deserves. I say that even though his
army burned down my grandmother's hometown of Meridian, Miss., as the famous
March to the Sea began (he only spared the house he had commandered for the
winter; too bad for my great-great-grandparents). Sheridan, on the other
hand--there's a guy who truly had a mean streak in him! Sherman saw a
strategic necessity while Sheridan saw a way to act as the avenging angel or
sumthin'.

But Jay, I don't know your statue-battle death question. Sheridan certainly
didn't die in battle (ask the Sioux, Cheyenne, Arapaho...).

This is all dangerously off-topic. So maybe we can rename some _Notropis_
species, the Sherman Shiner?
