Also, check your nitrate levels. If nitrates and FE are 0 and phosphates are
high the plants suffer. When I remember to add stump remover on a daily
basis the plants do well and the algaes decline. I went so long showing
zero nitrates even after adding 1/2 teaspoon a day to a planted 29 I was
convinced the test kits didn't work. I had three of them teesting zero
nitrates at this point. I finally put stump remover in a small container
with water and tested that. That gave me a gigantic reading. So it was
putting nitrates in the water even though by the next morning it would test
out to zero again in the tank.
Having really soft tap water, TDS less than 30, can be a real pain. It is
tough to make up water that will support life.
