Hey Everyone
I might be raising a future member. Due to some unfortunate circumstances, my
4 year old step grandson has come to live with my wife and me. He's certainly
showing an interest in fish.
While on vacation a few weeks ago, we took him on a nature oriented boat ride
to Assateague Island to show him the ponies. The ride included a stop at the
island to collect fish and inverts so the biologists on board could indentify
and discribe the various animals. After the boat was beached and the biologist
began handing out nets, I took off my shoes to wade into the water. When I got
up to disembark from the boat, I noticed that my grandson was gone. A quick
look around and I spotted him about 30 yards up the beach, waist deep in the
water, flailing about with his net. Even though he wouldn't touch the crabs or
the starfish back on the boat, he still remembers that his Papaw caught a
pipefish.
Then yesterday, I took him along to That Fish Place over in Lancaster. It
turns out that they now have a touch pool with starfish, juvenile horseshoe
crabs, and several species of fish and skates. Well, he was right there in the
water picking up the starfish and crabs. I had to hang on to his belt to keep
him from falling in had first.
Now on saturday, he wants to go fishing and catch some fish of his own. I've
decided to try and catch some bluegills on a rod and reel. I bought him a
cheap little rod and reel set last night so we'll see how it goes.
I never had any children of my own, But certainly am having a ball watching
this little guy grow and learn new things every day.
