Is it possible that your tests are not accurate? Those fungus patches may be
due to ammonia or as another extreme, maybe the water changes are introducing
chloramine. Some of the newer tablet test kits are very accurate and there
are no solutions to go bad.
Most of the type symptoms you are seeing are the secondary result of bad
water conditions and chlorine/chloramine has done that to me more than once.
Suspended "crud" by itself will not cause these symptoms.
