The Michigan Chapter has been ask to help the Detroit Zoo obtain fish for an
Ozark stream exhibit at its new National Amphibian Conservation Center. The
NACC is the first facility in the world designed for scientific & exhibition
of Amphibians. The Ozark stream exhibit is to show case the Hellbender the
largest salamander in N. America. Doug Sweet, the curator of fishes, has
given us a wishlist. Many of the fishes on his list occur in Michigan & will
present no problem. Some of the fish are either threatened or not native
here. Possibly some NANFA members from farther south could give us a hand.
Southern Redbelly Dace, Redside Dace, Bleeding Shiners, Cardnal Shiners &
Gilt Darters are among the fish we can't supply. Hopefully we can set up a
breeding program to insure a supply to the NACC. The exhibit isn't complete
yet & we are not sure when these fish will be needed. If you could help us
or have any advice please contact me or talk to Leo Long or myself at the
convention.
