I've heard it used to refer both to logperch and Hypentelium.

How about mufflejaw, or sand pike, or bubbler?

or, we could get really off the wall and go for Rafinesque's common names of
Ohio River fishes (from 1820, folks!): warty chubby, baiting fallfish,
bigback chubby, littlemouthed minny, summer false herring, spotted gizzard,
common hogfish, bluntnose hogfish, barbot, streaked-cheeks river bass,
gilded sunfish, dotted painted tail, springfish, toter, toad mudcat, clammy
catfish, and my personal fave (J.J. Audubon's too!), the devil-jack
diamond-fish!

cheers,
Dave
