Riverbanks Zoo & Garden is recruiting a full-time Senior Aquarist to work in
our Aquarium Reptile Complex. The aquarium collection at Riverbanks Zoo
includes over 75,000 gallons of aquatic exhibits, which consist of animals and
plants from native freshwater, South American and Australian freshwater,
mostly Pacific tropical saltwater and Pacific cold saltwater, and a few
Atlantic tropical exhibits. Over a thousand fish and invertebrates are
represented in a collection made up of several hundred species. The strength
of the collection lies in its diversity, animal health, and rich trophic level
approach to exhibitry. The Senior Aquarist reports to the Aquarium Supervisor
and assists in the training and supervision of all Aquarists and Aquarium
volunteers and interns.
Duties: Under general supervision, is responsible for the proper care of
Riverbanks' fishes, aquatic invertebrates, and aquarium plants. Oversees the
work activities of the Aquarists and volunteers assigned to the department and
is responsible for their safety. Feeds aquarium life, maintains, designs and
constructs exhibits, works with veterinary staff to monitor and treat
diseases, monitors and manipulates water chemistry, etc. Performs diving
duties and demonstrations. Participates in the development and delivery of
interpretive programs, including public speaking and direct interaction with
Riverbanks guests. Monitors and manipulates water quality through the use of
water chemistry. Inspects and evaluates the condition of exhibits and life
support to determine and/or participate in necessary repairs and
modifications. Instructs Aquarists in techniques for working animals in areas
of assignment. May be involved in various AZA, conservation, and other
professional activities including working with the Aquarium Supervisor on a
Pygmy Sunfish conservation project.
Requirements: Associate's degree in Biological Sciences, Bachelors' Degree
preferred. Three to five years of experience as an Aquarist or any equivalent
combination of education, training and experience which provides the required
knowledge, skills and abilities. Supervisory experience a plus. Must hold
valid SCUBA certification. Must possess or be eligible for a valid SC driver's
license.
