NANFA-- Old style heaters - usage?

I was digging around some old aquarium stuff that I have acquired over
time. One heater that I have (but never used yet) is an old hang-over-edge
type. It has a dial on the top which when turned, moved a screw
forward. The screw then brings two pieces of metal in contact. As the
screw is moved further to the right, the two pieces of metal (now in
contact) bend further in the opposite direction.

o Do the two metal strips have to be in contact for the heater to work?

o What happens when the strips are bent to the opposite side when the
screw is turned a lot?

Any suggestions appreciated.
