Have you tried Seachem's Onyx Sand? Seachem produces both Fluorite and Onyx
sand and gravel. They have the same qualities (both are "naturally-sourced
fracted substrates" concentrated in iron and other nutrients such as
magnesium and manganese) as Fluorite, except the color (smoky charcoal) and
that it's also available as a sand. Incidentally, I've heard that Seachem is
planning to come out with a sand variety of Fluorite.
