OK, as a Brit (and therefore someone who genuinely understands the humour of
both Monty Python and Red Dwarf, if anyone can) I can confirm that the mass
popularization of the term 'Smeg' was done on Red Dwarf, any previous use by
the MP team notwithstanding.
It was normally used, as 'Smeghead', by Lister, as an insult directed at
Rimmer.
Being derived from 'Smegma' it is particularly appropriate for people with a
certain personality type, of which unfortunately I know several.
