The Crested Gobies by far have the most character of the three because of
their size, (3"-6" for the ones I've collected) look, and temperament. I
feed all mine with a well loaded custom eyedropper and ghost shrimp by hand.
The Freshwater Gobies and Darter Gobies I have collected are very similar in
both appearance, character, and size (2-3"), with the two being much like
Darters. All three can live and thrive in totally freshwater environments.
The Crested Gobies (native to the Bahamas and migrate naturally to FL.) are
unique in that they can live and thrive in both marine and freshwater. I
have caught the Crested in freshwater but find them to be most abundant in
brackish water with a salinity level of 1.015. My brackish tanks are
typically weaned to almost pure freshwater gradually after stocking the
tanks to maintain a large variety of plant life. Of the three Gobies
mentioned all were collected from brackish water with the exception of the
Crested Gobies. I find them all to be very hardy and great bottom dwellers
for a community tank with the Crested Gobies ( their subtle coloring,
temperament and majestic fins) being one of my all-time favorites. I need to
take some better pix.
